Hamdok Warns of Impending Humanitarian Catastrophe in Sudan, Urges Immediate International Action to End the War

Dr. Abdalla Hamdok, Chair of the Leadership Council of the "Taqaddum" Coordination, participated in high-level international conferences in Brussels to address the critical situation in Sudan.

During these meetings, attended by former African and European leaders, as well as EU and international organization representatives, Dr. Hamdok warned that Sudan is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe that could surpass the Rwandan genocide of the 1990s.

In his address, Dr. Hamdok highlighted the devastating impact of the ongoing war, which has led to the deaths of over 150,000 people and displaced or forced over 12 million Sudanese to flee their homes.

He emphasized the severe toll on essential infrastructure and public services, particularly in health and education, stressing that the current humanitarian crisis in Sudan is one of the world’s worst.

Dr. Hamdok warned of the dangerous consequences of state fragmentation, with the multiplication of armed militias and regional factions threatening to plunge Sudan into ethnic and regional divides.

This could create a breeding ground for extremism and terrorism across the region. He urged the international community to take immediate action to protect Sudanese civilians, calling for the activation of the “Responsibility to Protect” principle, the establishment of safe zones, and the deployment of protection forces.

His proposals for urgent international measures included enforcing a no-fly zone over Sudan to protect civilians from aerial bombardments, and creating humanitarian corridors through neighboring countries without barriers. He also called for accountability for those obstructing life-saving humanitarian aid.

Dr. Hamdok also expressed his concern over the potential for a massive refugee crisis that could reach Europe if the conflict persists, placing an ethical and humanitarian responsibility on the international community to intervene promptly.

During the meetings, Dr. Hamdok met with several EU officials, including Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Charles Michel, President of the European Council, to discuss collaborative efforts for peace and reconstruction in Sudan.
